Partial Island Walk: 5 Days and 115 km

by Murray Banting

We did a 5-day select route starting in Summerside and stays in Kensington (Home Place B&B), Cavendish (Cavendish Breeze Inn), South Rustico (Rustico Resort and Cottages), Dalvay-by-the-Sea, and Mount Stewart (Bishops Rest). We modified the route on occasion to avoid route 6 which we did not enjoy walking on as it was busy even in October. Our luggage was taxied each day ahead and we just carried day packs. The weather was perfect and being October we did bring extra rain and layers in case we needed them but it turned out shorts were perfect.

We wanted to walk 20-25 km per day on average and if you choose a partial route I’d suggest setting it up to taxi with your luggage around route 6 or other busy sections and maintain your 20 km per day of walk. The Island Walk gave us a great taste of PEI as that was our objective. I’d recommend going earlier than October even though the weather and colours were great, however we found a lot of eating places and accommodations were closed or closing for the season. I also want to give a shout out to Bryson the Island Walk creator as he gave us some personal support and suggestions and even met up with us on route one day!
