Close your eyes and picture yourself here. Breathe in. Breathe out. Inhale the sweet saltwater air and feel the warm red soil beneath your feet. Open your eyes to a bright green field overlooking a glistening ocean expanse. The cows are grazing so quietly you can hear your own heartbeat. An osprey soars overhead. This place. This trail. You know you are supposed to be here.
Welcome to the stunningly unique and diverse landscape of Prince Edward Island. Let the Island Walk transform you to an uncomplicated time. A time to escape the mayhem of modern life. To discover a humbling place — its wildlife, its culture and its people. To come back different.
Why complete the Island Walk
In comparison to other long distance walking trails around the world, The Island Walk is ideal for seasoned hikers and those just starting out!
Minimal equipment is needed to complete this trail (sneakers and a small backpack, check out the Hiking Basics page for more information) and the route sees very few hills. Most of the terrain is on softer ground which provides a really great walking platform. Your feet will thank you for selecting such forgiving terrain when you’re walking 10-25 kilometres per day.
Oh, the things you’ll see! A Photographer’s Dream
In terms of beauty, the Island Walk is beyond compare.
It’s a photographer’s dream. The water, the beaches, the countryside, speckled with cattle, horses and even llamas throughout, provide that sense of calm in a world dealing with chaos. There are blueberry fields, potato fields, ponds, lakes, and the list goes on.
It seems at every bend there is a new landscape to admire.
