Best Day Hikes in Canada: The Social

The Island Walk on The Social – 3 Aug 2023

Travel expert Heather Greenwood Davis shares some of the most beautiful hiking spots available from coast to coast to coast.

“When I’m planning a hike I always want to get to a payoff, usually a viewpoint. You get to that viewpoint it’s almost like you’re rewarded and then on the way down it’s not so hard. So tell us about this spot in PEI.”

“So on PEI you’re actually going to get rewarded all the way through. It’s a 435 [mile] walk around the island. I am not sending you out to walk 435 miles. It was launched in 2021 it’s called The Island Walk and there are 32 sections and each of those sections is [approximately] 12.5 miles. So you can choose any section, it goes around the island so you’re always going to be able to get to the center if you need to do that. The section I’m sending you on is Sections 1 and 2 and it ends in Victoria-by-the-Sea. So this is this quaint, gorgeous community, tons of payoff. It’s about 7 to 9 hours to do the hike. When you get to Victoria-by-the-Sea you’ve got a local Chocolate Factory, a Pottery Shop, the Lobster Barn restaurant so you’re not going to leave the island without eating one of the best lobster rolls on the island. So absolutely worth visiting.”
